It’s been a while since our last one-day silent retreat in Taichung!

This time, we’re leaving the city behind and heading into the mountains near Guguan, to a quiet private property tucked away in Songhe Village.

Surrounded by forest, grassland, fruit trees, gardens, and a small ecological pond, the space feels like a hidden backyard in the mountains.

For one day, we’ll step away from the internet, and enter a seven hour silence.

No talking. No scrolling. No constant input. Just a day to see what happens when things get a little quieter.

So, we might wonder, what exactly is a silent retreat?

At its simplest, it means paying attention to what is happening within you.

For example, if you suddenly feel restless while sitting, your usual response might be to check your phone, get up, distract yourself, or talk to someone.

Instead of reacting straight away, we practise noticing first. This practice gives us a chance to slow that process down, to observe first, then respond.

Throughout the day, we’ll explore different forms of practice, including sitting meditation, mindful walking, body awareness, and simple mindfulness exercises. There will also be plenty of time to simply be in the mountains - resting, slowing down, and spending time with ourselves.

Come spend a quiet day with us in the mountains and see what seven hours of silence feels like for you!

Instructor

Instructor: Yoanna

“In a world that is so fast paced, we all need to learn how to stay calm and move at our own pace.”

Yoanna has experienced healing and growth through Breathing Techniques, Yoga, and Meditation Practices, and she hopes to bring that experience to our attendees too.

*This session will be guided in Mandarin.

*This session can be held bilingual; send your request to our official LINE @soulbarn at least one week before the retreat if you need.

Space

Tucked away in the mountains near Guguan, this private garden opens quietly beyond the forest and the Dajia River.

Shaped over more than a decade by one family, the land has been cared for slowly - native trees left standing, seasonal vegetables growing in the garden, and fallen pine needles returned to the soil as compost.

Wooden cabins are scattered across the lawn, with a glass house at the centre. Mornings begin with soft light and dew on the grass; by afternoon, mist rises from the valley and settles over the surrounding mountains.

A quiet place, closely connected to the land around it.

A little note: as the venue is surrounded by nature and no chemical pesticides are used, mosquitoes and insects are part of the environment. We recommend bringing insect repellent and wearing long pants.

Nourish

The mountains keep the good things hidden, and this kitchen gives every one of them away.

Every meal follows the season. The cook works whatever is ready into the dishes, using vegetables and fruit grown on site, seasoned lightly, plain and unhurried, carrying what this piece of land has put into them.

The vegetables open their leaves while the dew is still on them, and reach the kitchen not long after they're cut.

We eat surrounded by the garden that grew the food, and take our time over the story behind each dish.
